Kowarski, Lew
(1907-1979)
   physicist
   of Russian origin, Lew Kowarski was born in Saint Petersburg. The author of research on chain reactions, he discovered, with Frédéric joliot-curie and hans halban, the emission of neutrons during the fission of uranium. In June 1940, with Halban, he brought to England the world supply of heavy water (necessary for the production of an atomic bomb), after removing it from German Nazis. He took part in the construction of the first (1948) and the second (1952) French atomic pile, as well as the creation of CERN (Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire; the European laboratory for the study of nuclear particles established in 1952 at Meyrin, on the French-Swiss border near Geneva). Kowarski is also known for his studies in physical crystallography.
